Reasons for small garlic
Degeneration
Garlic planting material needs periodic renewal. To do this, you need to leave several shoots in different parts of the plot.
Diseases
If at the beginning of June the feathers turn yellow, wither and lag behind in development, this may mean that the garlic is sick with a fungus.
It is almost impossible to correct the situation. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out preventive treatment with fungicides when the garlic is still healthy.
Also, you cannot plant garlic in the same place every year.
Harmful insects
Many pests love garlic. The most common are onion flies, stem nematodes, root mites, onion moths, and others.
Before you start processing, you need to clearly understand what pest has affected the plant and select an effective remedy.
Acidic soil
Garlic is very sensitive to acidic conditions. To deacidify the soil, add slaked lime or chalk to the beds where the garlic will grow in the fall.
Weather conditions
Growing garlic requires a snowy winter, a spring without severe frosts, and a warm summer with moderate precipitation.
Poor quality planting material
In order for the cloves to grow large, you need to plant the largest cloves in the fall. However, do not do this tightly, but at an appropriate distance from each other. In order for the cloves to fill out well, the soil should be loose.
Insufficient amount of fertilizers
As soon as the snow melts, you should immediately feed the crop with ammonium nitrate or urea in a proportion of 50 g per 1 sq. m.
Watering
Garlic needs abundant and regular watering, which continues until the beginning of July. This is especially true if it was dry and hot in late spring and early summer.
