The peony bush is divided and rejuvenated under the following conditions:

  • if the peony bush is four to five years old or even older;
  • when the bush hardly blooms;
  • The bush is constantly affected by gray rot.

It is necessary to change the place.

To carry out the work, prepare the following tools: an axe, a hammer, a shovel or pitchfork, garden shears and pruning shears.

First, cut off all the green above-ground part, leaving 20 cm so that you can pick up the bush in your hands.

Then step back 25-30 cm from the bush and start carefully digging it in a circle. Then pick up the rhizome and pull it out.

Place the dug out rhizome on the ground and wash it with a stream of water to remove any soil.

Then inspect to find future horns for division.

A well-developed peony horn should have 3-5 buds and a healthy root.

Place it in the shade for 24 hours to allow the roots to wilt and soften a little.

This will make it easier to divide, but fresh roots may break, making division difficult.

In the meantime, dig planting holes for the new peony bushes and add some compost and superphosphate.

The next day, separate the peony horns with a sharp axe, gently tapping the butt with a hammer.

Use pruning shears to cut out all damaged roots.

Treat the cut areas with pharmaceutical brilliant green or sprinkle with crushed activated carbon. Then plant the young plants in a new place.
