Detox diets, contrary to popular belief, did not appear in our days, but long “before”.

A prime example of this is Ayurvedic medicine, which often used a 5-step detoxification method that included medicinal enemas and medicated vomiting.

In the 21st century, people have become more aware of how the body functions and what detoxification is.

This word (we are talking about detoxification, if you forgot) suggests the presence of toxins in the body that need to be removed. But people who advise using cleansing programs cannot always answer the question of what these toxins are.

There are indeed harmful molecules in the body that affect health (for example, tobacco molecules or inhaled harmful gases), but our body copes well with removing them on its own and usually does not need help.

What's more, there is currently no scientific evidence that detoxing actually removes toxins from the body, not to mention that some detox methods can be harmful to your health, especially if they involve mono-diets, such as drinking only green tea, kefir, or celery.

In addition, there is an opinion that detoxification can negatively affect a person’s psychological state.

Thus, proof of this was found by Hungarian scientists who conducted a study among participants of “health camps” where detox days were held.

The analysis found a link between detoxification and orthorexia nervosa, an unhealthy obsession with food.
