How to Transform an Old Chair Beyond Recognition: Just 3 Steps

Did you know that you can breathe a second life into any piece of furniture if you cover it with different patterns, ornaments and other materials, or, more simply, use the decoupage technique?

Expert of the online publication BelNovosti, designer Yulia Tychino, agreed to talk about the technique in more detail using the example of a chair.

Decoupage of a chair includes 3 main stages.

Preparation

At this stage, you will need to clean the chair from all dirt, including old varnish, and sand its surface with fine-grained sandpaper. The next step is to prime, and then the main layer of paint (after the primer has dried).

Decoupage

Now you need to cut out a fragment of the picture you are going to use from decoupage paper or napkin. Peel off the bottom layer, glue the fragment to the place intended for it and wait for it to dry.

Varnishing

To varnish a chair, use a water-based acrylic composition. Do not forget that the varnish must be applied in several layers, each time waiting for the previous one to dry.
