Why Corporal Punishment Came to Be Called Violence: Alternative Methods of Raising Children

By modern standards, physical punishment, or in common parlance, “giving a beating,” is violence against children.

Rods, belts, slaps and other forms of physical abuse as methods of education have become a thing of the past and are considered not just questionable, but harmful and ineffective.

Experts from Psychology Today magazine explained why physical abuse is considered a false idea about raising children.

Consequences of Punishments

Firstly, physical punishment of a child is fraught with the development of social, emotional and behavioral problems in the future.

Secondly, such methods are believed to cause aggression and disorders in children.

Thirdly, over time, the ability to self-control decreases, antisocial behavior develops, the level of empathy decreases, and the risk of violence on their part increases.

Alternative methods of education

1. Parents should offer their child to become familiar with the consequences of his behavior.

At the same time, it is important to be a model of calm and self-control.

2. Before you reproach your child or make a remark, you need to imagine the consequences of the prank and behavior.

And don't forget that many actions committed, including in adolescence, later cause regret and remorse in many.

3. Instead of setting restrictions, try to be proactive.

For example, warn that you can’t grab a hot object, etc. Agree that it sounds much softer than a categorical “Don’t touch!”

And of course, we must remember that a child growing up in a family where rules and boundaries are not established is unlikely to be obedient.
