The popular opinion that fashion determines everything, even the style of clothing, does not stand up to criticism from a psychological point of view, especially when it comes to teenage fashion.

Today, young people are fascinated by shapeless clothing, which stylists call the oversized style.

Psychologist Katerina Sidoruk told Minsk-Novosti what is behind the teenager’s passion for clothes that are several sizes too big.

The specialist draws attention to the fact that adolescence is associated with physical and emotional changes.

In this context, oversized clothing helps the child escape discussions about physical characteristics and traumatic events.

Why oversized?

1. It's not just about being overweight, but about wanting to hide from public condemnation. It's more of an "energy-saving defensive reaction."

If in the past young people more often showed off their bodies with the help of revealing clothes, then in the present day the opposite trend is observed.

People are not interested in showing off their physical attributes, or it happens on a different scale.

2. It is also a way to escape from traumatic events: a car accident, an incident in which a loved one died, a scar on the body, and even stress that resulted in weight problems.

Oversized clothing seems to protect against someone starting to disturb painful memories.

3. In addition, teenagers may be frightened by the changes that are happening to their bodies.

But at the same time, we must not forget about fashion trends and youth subcultures.
