Recently, the results of a large study were published showing that eating plant foods reduces the risk of developing cancer.

Does this mean that vegetarianism can be recommended as a preventative measure against cancer?

Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Vadim Pokrovsky answered this question in an interview with the publication Argumenty i Fakty .

What diet protects against cancer

As the expert explained, there are not many large-scale studies on the connection between diet and the development of cancer.

The good news, Pokrovsky says, is that no study has shown that plant foods increase the risk of cancer.

However, it cannot be said that vegetarianism is a cure for cancer.

The risk reduction shown in studies is measured in fractions of a percent, the specialist explained.

The exception, Pokrovsky continued, is three types of cancer.

First, colon cancer. Here, the link between diet and risk is most clear: people who eat enough fiber are less likely to develop colorectal cancer.

Second, prostate cancer. According to research, consuming large amounts of saturated fat increases the risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer.

Third, a plant-based diet reduces the risk of breast cancer.

As the professor explained, this is a hormone-dependent disease, and plant foods change the estrogen background.
