American surgeons have transplanted a genetically modified pig kidney into a human for the first time in the history of medicine.

A unique operation was performed in one of the hospitals in the state of Massachusetts.

This was reported by MIA "Russia Today" with reference to the press service of this medical institution.

The world's first transplant of a genetically modified pig kidney into a human was reported to have taken place last Saturday, March 16.

The animal's organ was transplanted into a 62-year-old man who was diagnosed with terminal kidney disease.

Experts say the pig kidney was subjected to 69 genomic changes.

As for the transplant operation, according to doctors, it lasted four hours.
