Pyogenic granuloma is a benign vascular tumor that can develop on both the skin and mucous membranes.

At the moment, the exact cause of its occurrence remains unknown, but there are a number of assumptions. In particular, it is assumed that microtraumas of the skin, hormonal imbalance (for example, during pregnancy), infectious diseases and malformations of blood vessels can contribute to its appearance.

Pyogenic granuloma is most often diagnosed in adolescents and young adults, as well as in pregnant women (in 5% of cases). The tumor usually develops on exposed areas of the body, such as the arms, legs (especially the fingers), face, and on the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose.

Oncologist of the 1st category of the HappyDerm medical center Lyudmila Artyushkevich notes that in pregnant women, pyogenic granuloma is most often found on the oral mucosa.

Externally, the tumor is a small round nodule on a stalk, up to 1.5 cm in diameter, which has a bright red, cherry or dark brown color.

The nodule contains many small vessels and can be easily injured, leading to profuse bleeding.

The tumor develops very quickly and within a few days or weeks can grow to a size of 2 mm to 1.5 cm.

The danger of pyogenic granuloma is that it is easily injured and can lead to profuse bleeding, and can also become a "gateway" for secondary infection and purulent inflammation.

Diagnostics

To diagnose pyogenic granuloma, it is enough to pay attention to its characteristic appearance and rapid growth.

However, to conduct differential diagnosis with amelanotic melanoma, it is recommended to perform dermatoscopy and, if necessary, histological examination of the formation.

Treatment

Treatment of pyogenic granuloma involves its removal. Laser removal is typically used, but surgical removal is preferred if the diagnosis is in doubt.

It is important to note that you should not try to remove pyogenic granuloma with folk remedies, as this can lead to tissue burns, bleeding and wound infection.

HappyDerm Medical Center is equipped with all the necessary equipment and qualified specialists for the diagnosis and removal of pyogenic granuloma.
