After all, you need to use such a toilet while sitting facing forward.
Why do people in Japan sit on the toilet facing forward?
In many public places in Japan, toilets are a floor-standing bowl, or, more simply, a hole in the floor.
This toilet is called Washiki and is shaped like a slipper.
A sign posted nearby explains that when sitting on the toilet, you should face the dome-shaped part.
It is designed to protect against splashes when the flush lever is pressed. And it is simply impossible to use such a toilet in any other way than sitting with your back to the exit.
