Despite the fact that ash is found in almost every recipe for natural fertilizer for vegetables and fruits growing in a summer cottage, it should be used wisely, and not blindly following recommendations from the Internet.
An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told what mistakes plant growers make when working with ash.
1. Mix with mineral fertilizers
Remember once and for all – ash paired with mineral water is absolutely useless, since as a result of a chemical reaction with ammophoska, ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate, ammonia evaporates.
Combinations with phosphorus fertilizers are also not the best option, otherwise the plants are at risk of chlorosis.
2. They don’t know the measure
Summer residents, who have only recently learned about the benefits of ash, sometimes scatter the remains of burning wood all over the plot, but this should not be done.
You shouldn't expect good results from thoughtlessly adding ash to all plants without exception. For example, such feeding is contraindicated for blueberries, some types of roses and lilies, hydrangeas, radishes, watermelons, and sorrel.
3. Use any ash
Not all ash can be called fertilizer. Plants will benefit from the ash that remains after burning cut branches, softwood and hardwood - linden, spruce, pine, alder and aspen in the first case and elm, oak, ash, poplar and larch - in the second.
