Foods high in saturated fat have an extremely negative effect on the liver.
This is the conclusion reached by scientists from Oxford University.
The results of their study were published in the British Medical Journal .
What foods are dangerous for the liver
As part of the study, a group of volunteers followed a diet high in saturated fat.
The menu was dominated by fatty meat, cookies, butter, etc. After just three weeks, the subjects' cholesterol levels increased and signs of fatty liver appeared.
At the same time, the overall weight of the study participants remained virtually unchanged.
Scientists say this suggests that fatty liver disease can occur even in people who are not overweight.
The control group, which ate foods high in polyunsaturated fats (found in avocados and fatty fish), showed improvements in cholesterol levels and liver health.
