What to do if a fluorescent lamp breaks: treat it the same way as a mercury thermometer

A fluorescent lamp has the appearance of a sealed glass tube, coated on the inside with a layer of phosphor.

This tube is filled with an inert gas under pressure. A small amount of mercury, either pure or in the form of an amalgam, is also introduced into the tube.

For this reason, if a fluorescent lamp breaks, you should act in the same way as if you dropped a mercury thermometer.

First, open the windows and leave the room.

The longer you are away, the better. It is advisable to allow at least 5-10 minutes of airing time.

Then carefully collect the broken pieces of the lamp in a dustpan or on a piece of cardboard, and then transfer them to an airtight container or a plastic bag with a zip lock.

If the fragments are small, tape will help, the rest can be removed with a damp paper towel.

After this, all you have to do is take the collected fragments to the recycling point.
