A down jacket requires special care and washing so as not to lose its shape and quality. Here are some tips on how to properly wash a down jacket so as not to ruin it.

Preparing for washing

Before washing, the down jacket needs to be prepared. To do this, you need the following.

• Check if there are any stains, holes or torn seams on the down jacket. If there are, they need to be removed or sewn up.

• Close all zippers, buttons and Velcro on the down jacket so that they do not damage the fabric or down.

• Turn the down jacket inside out.

• Choose a suitable washing powder or liquid for washing down jackets. It is better to use special products that do not contain bleaches, enzymes or fragrances. They can damage the down.

Machine wash

You can wash your down jacket in a washing machine if the label says so. To do this, you need the following.

• Select a washing mode for delicate fabrics or a special mode for down jackets, if available. The water temperature should not exceed 30 degrees, and the spin should not exceed 800 revolutions per minute.

• Place the down jacket in the drum of the washing machine without twisting or squeezing it. It is better to wash the down jacket separately from other items so as not to overload the machine.

• Add detergent according to the instructions on the package. Do not use fabric softener as it may degrade the quality of the down.

• Start the wash and wait until it finishes. After washing, do not take the down jacket out of the machine immediately, but let it sit for 10-15 minutes.

Hand wash

You can wash your down jacket by hand if it is not too dirty or if the label says machine washing is prohibited. To do this, you need the following.

• Fill a bathtub or large basin with warm water (no more than 30 degrees) and dissolve a detergent for down jackets in it.

• Place the down jacket in water and gently knead it with your hands, without rubbing or twisting. Leave the down jacket in the water for 15-20 minutes to soak.

• Drain the dirty water and rinse the down jacket in clean water several times until the foam from the detergent disappears.

• Squeeze the down jacket with your hands, without twisting or squeezing it.

Drying a down jacket

You need to dry your down jacket correctly so that it does not lose its shape and volume. To do this, you need the following.

Place the down jacket on a horizontal surface, such as a clothes dryer, towel or sheet. Straighten the down jacket and give it the desired shape. Do not dry the down jacket on a radiator, in a tumble dryer or in direct sunlight.

Shake the down jacket periodically and fluff up the fluff so that it does not stick together or form lumps. You can use your hands or a special brush for down jackets for this.

Check the dryness of the down jacket by pressing it with your fingers. If the down jacket does not leave wet marks, it is dry.

Drying a down jacket can take from several hours to several days, depending on the temperature and humidity.
