It recently became known that less potatoes were planted in Belarus this year than last year.
In the future, they want to pay increased attention to onions, for the cultivation of which additional areas have begun to be allocated in large quantities.
Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Shuleiko announced this on the Belarus 1 TV channel.
At the same time, he assured citizens that the republic had received a sufficient quantity of vegetables to provide the population with the famous “borscht set”.
Let us remind you that the latter includes potatoes, beets, onions and carrots.
The country has long adopted a number of software products that calculate how much needs to be sown to supply the domestic market. And, of course, everyone is interested in making money - selling for export, - said the deputy head of government.
He separately outlined the situation with potatoes, which were planted in smaller quantities this year compared to 2023.
Shuleiko said the reason for this was that “the demand in previous years showed that so much was not needed.”
According to him, this year it is planned to receive about 990,000 tons of potatoes, which is “enough for the domestic market.”
Belarus has about 300,000 tons of this vegetable for export, the Deputy Prime Minister noted.
He also reported on the surplus of cabbage, where, however, “the harvest has been stabilized for a whole year of trading in our own vegetables for the ‘borscht set’.”
And he pointed out that the country’s stabilization funds have practically completed their formation.
As for onions, Shuleiko said that “we would like more of them,” so additional areas are being allocated for 2025.
