Today, October 6, the Orthodox Church celebrates the day of remembrance of the Apostle Thomas.

Thomas was nicknamed the unbeliever by the people because of his constant doubts, because he even doubted that Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

By this date, the peasants finished working in the garden and devoted themselves to household chores, preparing for winter.

It was believed that on Thomas Day there was every chance to attract good luck and be cured of illnesses.

In order to strengthen one’s health and cure sick people, one had to turn to a consecrated crust of bread for help.

There were many weather signs associated with this day.

Thus, tall weeds indicated that there would be a lot of snow in the winter, and a small number of mushrooms indicated a harsh winter.

The fact that the winter months would be harsh was also judged by the field mice that came to the village.

If on October 6th the cries of geese flying south were heard, it meant that winter weather would arrive very soon. Cranes flying away were also a sign that autumn had given way to winter.

On this day, it is worth watching other birds. For example, a rooster that starts to sing at night foretells bad weather. Ducks that splash in the water and scream "forecast" rain, and their silence indicates the approach of a thunderstorm or thunder. Ruffled crows are harbingers of precipitation.
