Quarantine declared in Pinsk: American white butterfly spotted

The American white butterfly has "launched an attack" on the city of Pinsk in the Brest region of Belarus.

In connection with this, a quarantine has been declared in the district center. The corresponding decision (number 1281 of September 2 of this year) was made by the local city executive committee.

The official version is: establishment of a quarantine regime for the American white butterfly (Hyphantria cunea Drurу).

As reported by the Belta agency with reference to the Pinsk City Executive Committee, the restrictions apply throughout the entire settlement.

Specialists will carry out quarantine phytosanitary measures to localize and eliminate outbreaks of the voracious pest.

Local authorities have called on businesses, organizations, individual entrepreneurs and ordinary Pinsk residents to survey their land plots and adjacent territories.

It is recommended that when outbreaks of the American white butterfly are detected, they be localized and eliminated.

What is known about this insect? That it not only migrates independently, but also through transport, transporting plant and industrial products.

An aggressive butterfly, very skillfully adapting to new habitat conditions, damages over 250 species of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants.

Her favorite delicacies are box elder, apple, plum, cherry plum, mulberry, etc.

A typical sign of an insect outbreak is web nests with colonies of caterpillars.

Initially, only a few leaves may be braided, but then the entire branch will be.

The nests, growing, can reach 1.5 m, and often they encircle entire trees.

Experts advise that if such nests are found, they should be cut off and burned on the spot.
