Tropical nights and lack of precipitation: what August 2024 was like in Belarus

The average air temperature in Belarus in August 2024 exceeded the climate norm by 1.9 degrees.

Tropical nights were observed and rainfall was well below normal.

What August 2024 was like in Belarus

The average temperature in August was +19.9 degrees, which is 1.9 degrees higher than normal.

August of this year was the fifth in the ranking series of observations from warmest to coldest month since 1945.

Positive temperature anomalies were observed throughout the country and were mainly 1.8-2.4 degrees.

In terms of regions, the highest values of positive anomalies were recorded in the Grodno region (2.1 degrees), the lowest – in the Vitebsk region (1.7 degrees).

In the first ten-day period, the average temperature was slightly below normal (0.8 degrees), in the second – 1.6 degrees higher. The third ten-day period was very warm, the positive anomaly was 4.7 degrees.

Daytime temperatures rose to +20-25 degrees on most days, and to +30 and higher in the second half of August.

The maximum temperature – +35.1 degrees – was recorded at the Oktyabr stations on August 19 and Lelchitsy on August 21.

Night temperatures were mostly +11-18 degrees. In the second and third decades, tropical nights were observed in some places on certain days (temperatures from +20 degrees).

The minimum temperature – +4.7 degrees – was recorded on August 14 at the Poleskaya station.

On average, 39 millimeters of precipitation fell across the country in August (62% of the norm).

A shortage of precipitation (from 40 to 80%) was observed throughout the country, with the exception of individual observation points in the Vitebsk, Grodno and Minsk regions.

At Vasilevichi station, the absolute minimum monthly precipitation amount was renewed (5 millimeters).
