The bulldog ant (Myrmecia pyriformis) has been honored with a spot in the Guinness Book of Records, but the reason for it is rather sad.
The thing is that the insect found in the coastal regions of Australia was recognized as the most dangerous ant in the world.
At least three people have died from the bite of this ant since 1936. The last death occurred relatively long ago – in 1988.
What else would you expect from a creature with such a scary name? By the way, this ant was nicknamed a bulldog for its enormous jaws.
It is these that the ant uses during an attack to hold its victim – like a real bulldog. It is unlikely that it will be possible to escape, since each mandible is “equipped” with many small teeth.
But the deadly weapon is not the ant's jaws, but the sting located in its abdomen.
Because it is smooth, the ant can sting more than once, each time injecting more poison.
Once in the blood, the poison quickly spreads throughout the body, and the victim's body stops functioning. A person can be saved by an injection of adrenaline, but it must be administered immediately - the victim has a maximum of 20 minutes, after which death occurs due to anaphylactic shock and an allergy to the poison.
