Many people know about the outstanding Soviet and Russian athlete Alexander Karelin.
Over the entire period of his performances, the Greco-Roman wrestler won 888 victories and suffered only 2 defeats.
But in freestyle wrestling competitions there was an athlete who managed to win 100% of the official fights he had during his active career.
We are talking about the Japanese Osamu Watanabe.
Watanabe began practicing freestyle wrestling while still in school.
Later, the young man entered Chuo University, where he continued to practice this sport.
In 1960, 20-year-old Watanabe won the Japanese Championship.
Two years later, the wrestler won two gold medals at once - at the Asian Games and the World Championship.
A year later, Watanabe became a two-time world champion.
At the 1964 Olympics, which took place in the wrestler's home country, the athlete had the status of a clear favorite. And he lived up to expectations: thanks to five won fights, Watanabe became the Olympic champion.
After his triumph at the Olympic Games, the 24-year-old Japanese ended his sports career, while maintaining his status as an undefeated wrestler.
During his short period of performance, the outstanding athlete took part in at least 189 fights. He did not lose any of them.
This achievement (100% wins) will never be surpassed. Theoretically, it is only possible to repeat this record.
By the way, Osamu Watanae is mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records as a wrestler who won 189 out of 189 matches.
After finishing his sports career, Watanabe became an employee of one of the Japanese advertising and communications companies.
As a mature adult, the Japanese competed in veterans' competitions.
