Kola Superdeep: Why Scientists Stopped Drilling the World's Deepest Borehole

The question of what the Earth hides in its depths has long troubled the minds of scientists.

To get an answer, the development of mines was started - for example, in Russia, since the late 1950s, there has been a program to study the subsoil by selective drilling of super-deep wells.

Note: wells whose depth starts at 7 km can be called super-deep.

The most popular borehole in the world that matches the stated description is the Kola Superdeep Well, which is now mothballed.

Its design was calculated for 15 km, but due to technical difficulties, drilling had to be stopped when the well depth reached 12,261 meters.

Among the difficulties that stopped the scientists were the colossal temperatures exceeding 200 degrees. You must admit that not every technology can withstand such “heat of passion”.

In addition, despite all the measures taken to strengthen the mine channel, the layers of earth continue to move, and this leads to a shift in the well - by the way, the Kola has a deviation of 840 meters.

In conclusion, it is worth noting that there are (and quite a few) oil and gas producing wells in the world whose length exceeds 12 km, but they do not go deep, but to the side.

Earlier we told you which place in the ocean is considered the most dangerous and mysterious.
