Lakes can vary greatly in their parameters from one another, but usually these types of reservoirs cannot be called too large.
Although some of them stand out from the usual picture due to their size.
For example, Baikal, Upper, Caspian Sea, Victoria and some others are quite large bodies of water. However, their parameters are difficult to compare with the real record holder.
This record was recorded by the Guinness Book of Records after a group of scientists managed to reliably record and determine the dimensions of the leader of the rating.
As it turns out, the largest body of water in our history was Lake Paratethys, also called a sea. Its dimensions were just under 3 million square kilometers.
These figures exceed even the size of the Mediterranean Sea.
The reservoir existed more than 10 million years ago.
And only relatively recently scientists managed to unambiguously determine the exact area of the lake. Incidentally, after Paratethys began to dry up, its waters were partially preserved within other reservoirs.
It is believed that the Black, Aral and Caspian Seas became its "heirs".
