Colin and Donna Craig-Brown from New Zealand discovered a giant potato in their garden in August 2022.

Without hesitation, the couple decided to apply to the Guinness Book of Records.

Colin stressed that the fruit they found looks like a potato and tastes exactly the same.

However, after several months of waiting, the couple received a letter from the publication stating that the record had been denied.

The response stated that the fruit found was actually a tuber of the thladiantha plant and therefore could not be registered as the largest potato.

The couple decided to name their find "Doug." After posting photos of the unusual tuber on social media, it became a local celebrity.

Local farmers weighed it and found it to be a whopping 7.8 kilograms. But despite its impressive size, Doug was unable to break the record for the largest potato, which still belongs to a tuber weighing just under 5 kilograms dug up in Britain in 2011.

Earlier we reported on the record set during the Diwali festival in India .
