There is a very interesting object in the English county of East Sussex.
It is called "Woodingdean Well".
The waterworks is located in the courtyard of the Nuffield Hospital.
The depth of the well is 391.6 meters.
There are no other wells in the world that are so deep, dug by hand.
The well was built in 1858 to provide water to the people living in the workhouse.
The administration of the institution decided not to install the water supply system: they felt that it was not economically viable.
But later it turned out that the idea of starting to dig a well was not the best one.
The digging continued for a very long time, but the workers still could not reach the groundwater.
The desired result was achieved only in 1862: at the moment when the depth of the well exceeded 390 meters.
Ironically, the well, the creation of which took so much time and effort, ceased to be used in 1866: a decision was made to switch to a water supply.
However, Woodingdean Well was not forgotten. It is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the deepest hand-dug well.
