It is no secret that borscht is the most popular and famous dish of Slavic cuisine.
Despite the fact that we have been familiar with it since childhood, we do not know everything about this dish.
Not everyone knows that this dish has such a rich history: many chefs note that borscht is at least five hundred years old.
In doing so, they rely on written sources.
It is quite possible that borscht was prepared even earlier, but there is simply no evidence left.
We are used to making soup with the obligatory addition of potatoes. It gives the soup a richness. We also often use tomatoes or tomato paste to add sourness and preserve the color of the beets.
However, these vegetables arrived to the Slavic lands late. Therefore, borscht was prepared without these components.
Borscht recipes may differ not only in each country: sometimes each family has its own version of preparing the dish.
Therefore, it is difficult to say exactly how many recipes have been recorded.
However, we are talking about literally hundreds of recipes.
