Grounds for a Nuclear Strike. Putin Approves Updated Russian Nuclear Doctrine

Vladimir Putin approved the Fundamentals of Russian State Policy in the Field of Nuclear Deterrence.

The doctrine now contains a basis for Moscow to launch a nuclear strike.

This will be possible, according to the document, in the event of a critical threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and its ally Belarus.

Previously, the TASS agency recalls , the basis for the use of nuclear weapons was considered to be a threat to the “very existence of the state.”

The updated doctrine clarifies the grounds for the use of nuclear weapons.

In particular, it says that Russia reserves the right to use it in response to the use of such weapons against the Russian Federation and its allies.

The second reason is aggression against Russia and Belarus, members of the Union State.

In the latter case, we are talking about the use of conventional weapons under the condition of creating a “critical threat” to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the named countries.
