Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has announced his decision to run for a new term.

The head of state made the corresponding statement in an interview with Russian journalist Olga Skabeeva.

The journalist posted an excerpt from the interview on her Telegram channel.

How Lukashenko announced his decision to run for another term

Today, the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus set the presidential elections for January 26, 2025.

Lukashenko is taking part in the BRICS summit in Kazan today and has already given three interviews on the sidelines of the forum – to BBC journalist Steven Rosenberg, Skabeeva and the Chinese television channel CGTN.

Skabeeva asked the head of state whether he would run in the next elections.

“Yes, Olya, I will go to the presidential elections, ” Lukashenko replied.

According to the Constitution and the Electoral Code of Belarus, presidential elections are held no later than 2 months before the expiration of the term of office of the previous head of state.

The lower house of parliament calls the elections. The president takes office after the inauguration. From that moment on, the powers of the previous head of state cease.

The inauguration of the current president took place on September 23, 2020. Accordingly, the elections must take place no later than July 20 of next year.
