Today, at the summit on migration, the European Union decided to tighten migration controls on the borders with Russia and Belarus.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus commented.

MFA commentary on the EU decision to tighten controls on the borders with Russia and Belarus

Journalists asked Foreign Ministry press secretary Anatoly Glaz to comment on the final document of the EU summit, in which, in relation to Russia and Belarus, the European Council declares its intention to ensure effective control at the external borders of the union by all available means and warns that it will not allow the abuse of European values, including the right to asylum, and the undermining of European democracies.

The representative of the Foreign Ministry stated that with this statement the European Council crossed out for itself all provisions of international law concerning refugees, and publicly admitted that the rhetoric about European values is only an illusion for external use.

According to the diplomat, Belarus does not need such European values, and there has been no democracy in Brussels for a long time.

Glaz noted that European leaders are well aware that European and international law oblige them to treat asylum seekers and refugees humanely, and that the cause of the chaos at the border is their irresponsible breakdown in border cooperation with neighboring states.

However, the diplomat continued, European leaders lack the political resolve to correct the situation.

Yes, in general, they don’t care about the real solution to this problem, ” said the representative of the diplomatic department.

He added that it was surprising to hear from the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, about the exceptional nature of the migration situation on the border with Belarus, given that less than half a percent of all refugees enter the EU through this section.
