Pets and Christmas Lights: 5 Safety Rules

11.12.2024 19:59

The intense flickering of Christmas lights can cause pets to become stressed and anxious, especially if the lights are left on all night.

Bright light is also harmful to smaller pets – hamsters, guinea pigs and other rodents. For them, it is perceived as a daytime signal and disrupts their nighttime activity.

Even birds living in cages begin to experience problems with rest as a result of excess artificial light. All this cannot pass without leaving a trace for their health.

But this doesn't mean that if you're a pet owner, you should give up your Christmas lights. But making some small changes is highly recommended.

1. Instead of string lights with flashing lights, buy ones that emit a steady light. They are less distracting to animals.

2. Dim the lights – choose warm, muted lighting tones.

3. Do not leave decorations on at night so that animals can rest peacefully in the dark.

4. Give preference to shorter garlands - this way animals have fewer chances to get caught on them. But even short models should be hung at a sufficient height.

5. Be moderate in decorating your garden – do not illuminate secluded corners favored by animals.
