Should You Let Your Dog Lick You: Think Twice

Some avid dog lovers firmly believe that a dog can heal wounds by licking itself.

In fact, this belief is nothing more than a myth. Moreover, if the skin is damaged (there are scratches, cuts, etc.), it is better not to let the dog touch it with its tongue at all.

The thing is that capnocytophagous bacteria may be present in a dog’s saliva.

They do not harm the animal itself, but a person who comes into contact with them may have serious problems - in some cases, everything can end in death.

Capocytophages pose a particular danger to people with weakened immune systems, but even good health cannot guarantee 100% safety.

Symptoms of infection may become noticeable immediately, and sometimes it takes from 3 to 5 days. There are cases when symptoms appear even after 2 weeks.

If you feel worse after contact with dog saliva (fever, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, abdominal pain, muscle or joint pain), you should consult a doctor.

Pay attention to the area of skin where the saliva got: if it becomes red, swollen, or begins to fester, this may be a sign of infection.

As for intact skin, there is no clear opinion.

If you like it when your dog licks your hands, feet or face, you can let him do it. The main thing is to wash your skin thoroughly with water and antibacterial soap after contact with your pet.
