Cats and Poisonous Plants: Can Our Pets Distinguish Between Dangerous and Safe Species?

Cats are known for being picky eaters and are considered to be one of the pickiest creatures.

Probably due to this feature, cases of poisoning in cats are rare.

However, this possibility cannot be completely ruled out: a young and inexperienced cat is capable of trying an unfamiliar flower to taste – not because of hunger, but because of curiosity or boredom.

Therefore, if you have green plants in your apartment in addition to furry pets, remove potentially dangerous plants to where the cat cannot reach them.

Some flowers should not be kept indoors at all.

For example, poisoning in a purring cat can occur as a result of contact with lily pollen. Aloe vera, azalea, chrysanthemum, daffodils, tulips and geranium are also poisonous to cats.

Instead, it is recommended to choose calathea, orchid or gerbera.

And finally: do not think that cats gnaw plants because they want to do harm. No, this is how they improve digestion and cleanse their stomachs from the hair they swallow when licking.
