Cats are freedom-loving creatures and some pets even consider transportation in a carrier as a threat.

Trying to put a collar on a cat and take it for a walk on a leash often ends in scratches and bites. Pets do not understand that the owner is simply afraid of the pet escaping.

How to Train a Cat to Walk on a Leash

1. Buy a bib and leash that are appropriate for your pet's size from a store.

2. Start accustoming your pet to wearing the accessory indoors. You don’t need to fasten the bib tightly – a finger should easily fit between the belt and the pet’s body.

3. Only after the cat has gotten used to the bib can you attach the leash. Obedience should be encouraged with cat treats.

4. Don't buy a retractable leash. Attach it and leave it for a while so the animal can get used to its new fate.

5. Only after the animal no longer feels aversion to the accessories can you go outside.

6. Here you will need to teach your pet to follow you on a leash. This will take a lot of time and patience. Surely the first reaction will be the desire to hide.

7. At the same time, you cannot punish the cat for disobedience, yank or pull on the leash. Use treats and games, monitor the behavior of the pet.

Remember that the animal may experience stress during a walk. Therefore, the first walks may be short.

As you get used to it, you can change the route and increase the time spent outside.
