Cats, as we know, are unable to distinguish only sweet tastes, while they recognize others - salty, sour and bitter - “perfectly”.

So, our furry pets really like salty food - you yourself may have noticed that the cat eats salted food more willingly.

Cats also like the sour taste - by the way, this specific feature is often used by food manufacturers, adding phosphoric acid to them as an acidic additive.

However, there are no fans of bitter food among members of the feline family.

They are able to feel bitterness even in minimal concentrations, so cases of poisoning cats with toxins found in spoiled products are very rare.

This same trait also explains the fact that wild cats will not eat carrion, and domestic cats will not eat rotten food in a bowl.

For this same reason, it is sometimes so difficult to “treat” your pet with medicine – because of the bitter taste of the drug, the animal immediately experiences a gag reflex.

By the way, you can use this feline feature for your own purposes if you want to prevent furniture and other interior items from being damaged by your pet's teeth. It is enough to apply a bitter spray or deodorant to them, and the cat will lose all interest in them.
