People often have a dog and a cat at the same time, but such a neighborhood sometimes leads to conflicts between the pets.

But there is good news: with the right approach, these animals can be made friends and serious problems can be avoided.

Below you will find the basic steps that a dog and cat owner should take to prevent possible conflicts and ensure harmonious coexistence of their pets.

1. Even in infancy, do not allow the puppy to chase cats.

This may seem funny to some, but it can cause serious problems in the future. Stop any attempts by your puppy to harm your cat or kitten. Your dog should know from the very beginning that this behavior is unacceptable.

2. Avoid situations where pets compete with each other.

Don't exalt one pet over another. For example, if you treat one of your pets with a treat, then immediately treat the other one. If you pet one pet, then be sure to do the same for the other one.

3. If you are just planning to get a puppy and you already have a cat in your house, it is recommended to choose a dog breed that gets along well with other animals.

These breeds include collies, corgis, and shelties. These dogs are calm and non-aggressive, which will help them get along easily with your cat and other pets.

4. The ideal option is if the animals meet at the age of up to 4 months. Everything can also work out well if the cat is less than 1 year old and the dog is less than six months old.

5. If you don’t have a cat or a dog yet, but would like to have both, it’s better to first get a kitten, and after 1.5-2 months – a puppy.
