Can a Domestic Cat Survive Outside in Winter: A Veterinarian Reveals the Truth

It is no secret that pets often become homeless. Sometimes not of their own free will, and sometimes out of stupidity – when they run away from home.

Even in the warm season, a domestic cat can find many interesting things on the street. In winter, at best, a pet without a permanent place of residence can end up in a shelter.

The publication Pravda.ru reported whether a domestic cat that got lost in the country or in the city will be able to survive outside in winter, citing a veterinary expert.

Firstly, it all depends on the weather conditions.

In their natural fur coat, cats can steadfastly and courageously survive frosts of up to 10 degrees Celsius.

Secondly, it is important for the pet to find a shelter or other heating point - a basement, attic, and so on.

It happens that pets settle down to warm up under the hood or on the wheel of a car near a cooling engine.

Long walks in the cold can lead to hypothermia.

Street cats are more resilient, but domestic animals face a sad fate.

A cat or kitten raised in a greenhouse does not have the same survival skills in the wild as a stray cat.

If they are not taken to a shelter or placed in a home soon, they may die within 2-4 years.

Earlier we talked about what a sad dog looks like.
