What is the difference between a guard dog and a protection dog: no, they are not the same thing

Many landowners get a dog to guard their "property".

At the same time, confusion often arises between two, at first glance, synonymous concepts – “guard dog” and “protection dog”.

In fact, there is a difference between them, and it is quite significant.

So, all that a guard dog is capable of is to notify its owner by barking that strangers have been spotted on the territory “entrusted” to it.

As practice shows, even yard dogs can handle such a task, since the desire to bark at strangers is instinctive in dogs.

But only a specially trained guard dog can be called a guard dog. In addition to the designated function - barking - such a dog will be able to attack a robber and detain him, because he clearly understands the intruder's intentions.

By the way, you shouldn’t consider representatives of hunting and sled breeds as guards, since they are very loyal to all people.

Fighting dogs, which show aggression mainly towards their own kind, and not towards people, are also not suitable for these purposes.

Experience shows that the best guard dog can be a shepherd dog, as well as one whose breed was specially bred for guard, security and watchdog service. But even in this case, the importance of training should not be underestimated.
