Before we begin to tell you what you should do to stop your hamster from biting its owner's hands, it is worth naming the reasons for this behavior.
These pets use their small but sharp teeth when they think they are in danger.
People who have only recently acquired a pet complain of hamster bites especially often. This is due to the fact that the hamster experiences stress from moving to a new place and needs time to adapt.
Note the telltale signal your hamster makes before he charges into battle: he usually lies on his back and lets out a long squeal.
This happens, for example, when a pet is woken up or not allowed to explore a new place.
Instead of wrapping the animal in a tight embrace as soon as possible, introduce it to your hand. Put a treat in the cage and your hand next to it. Most likely, the hamster will eat the treat and then start sniffing the unfamiliar object.
If at this stage the hamster decides to taste your limb, it is worth being patient instead of twitching and screaming. This is how the animal gets to know you.
The next step is feeding from the palm. When the hamster begins to confidently take food from the palm, you can gently stroke it with your finger, but only on the back.
After the previous steps have been successful, you can carefully place the pet on your palm and take it out of the cage. You need to act softly, smoothly and carefully.
