Why a Domestic Cat Coughs: Reasons That Should Not Be Ignored

Coughing occurs even in domestic cats that live in fairly comfortable conditions and therefore, it would seem, should not get sick.

In fact, there may be several reasons for this in an animal, and they cannot be ignored. We will tell you about the most common ones.

Why do cats cough?

1. Dust and household chemicals used during cleaning can act as irritants. In this case, coughing is a protective reaction of the body, which wants to get rid of foreign bodies.

2. This may be a consequence of irritation of the mucous membranes, in other words, an allergic reaction. Sometimes accompanied by nasal discharge.

3. Also, one should not exclude inflammatory processes occurring in the pet’s body.

What to do

First, you need to pay attention to the duration of symptoms and types of cough.

This can last from several days to 1 week. Chronic cough lasts up to a month or more.

Secondly, the cough can be muffled, loud, dry or wet.

Thirdly, you need to note the time of day when the animal begins to cough, and also notice whether the sound the pet makes is dry or wet.

All of these symptoms should be noted and reported to the veterinarian during the visit so that the specialist can make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment.
