Why do cats' pupils change shape?

You've probably noticed that a cat's pupils can be either round or slit-shaped.

The thing is that the appearance of cat eyes changes depending on the lighting.

If it is dark around, the pupil will dilate, becoming completely round.

This allows more light to reach the retina, allowing the animal to see in the dark.

And vice versa - in bright light, the pupil takes the form of a slit and decreases in size - this is how the cat's eyes protect themselves from bright light.

In addition to illumination, several other factors influence the shape of the pupil.

For example, if your pet is preparing to play or hunt, his pupils will most likely be dilated.

The same phenomenon is observed when an animal is on guard and is preparing to fight off danger or escape. Such situations occur during a walk on the street, a trip, moving to a new house, the appearance of strangers, sharp sounds, etc.
