Why you shouldn't sleep with your feet towards the door: scientists' opinion

Many people will never agree to sleep on a bed if their feet are pointing towards the door.

According to signs, a person who sleeps with his feet towards the door risks bringing his own death closer.

Perhaps the belief arose from the fact that the Slavs had a custom of carrying the dead out of the house feet first. In order for the soul of a deceased person to leave the house for sure, it was customary to throw the doors wide open - this is a more or less logical explanation for why doors began to be considered a portal between the world of the living and the world of the dead.

At the same time, scientists from the University of Munich managed to prove that keeping the door in the line of sight really does matter.

They conducted a study asking participants to place specific pieces of furniture, namely a table, chair, wardrobe and bed, on a drawing of a room.

Most of the subjects (76-94%) placed the bed in such a way that the person lying on it could see the entrance, that is, his feet would “look” at the door.

Respondents also more often placed the bed against the wall towards which the door opened, and tried to make sure that the distance between them was as large as possible.

The authors of the experiment believe that the results obtained can be explained by human evolution.

In a dream, people are in a state of heightened vulnerability. Because of this, they would like to keep the entrance under control so that they can immediately notice a potential attacker.

If the bed is located near the wall towards which the door opens, the person will be hidden from possible danger for longer, and a large distance between the bed and the opening gives more time to react.

A sign is a stable connection between two phenomena of objective reality, one of which is understood as a sign, and the second as its interpretation, usually in the form of a forecast for the future; a linguistic (in the form of an aphorism, paremia) representation of this connection.
