Since the first Emperor of All Russia, Peter I, dealt with the boyars’ habit of wearing beards, it ceased to be obligatory and was worn only by members of the clergy.

In the modern world, beards have become popular with rock musicians and bikers, and then hipsters. But suddenly there are too many bearded men around, and they are far from the listed subcultures.

Scientists from the University of Silesia (Poland) and the University of Padua (Italy) investigated why men started growing beards again.

The results of the work were published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

The "beard bearers" named the reasons, and scientists drew conclusions with an emphasis on social motives.

Conclusions of scientists

The survey allowed us to identify the main motives of bearded men: self-defense and caring for loved ones, status and the search for a soulmate.

People around them consider bearded people to be healthier and more physically developed.

Also, having thick facial hair increases trust and makes a person more friendly.

But at the same time, there were also those who called the bearded men aggressive.

Also, a bearded man is perceived as being ready for fatherhood, long-term relationships and caring for the family. This is in comparison with men who are used to shaving every day.

At the same time, scientists came to the conclusion that the presence of a beard does not indicate an attempt to compensate for a lack of masculinity.
