Which drink quenches thirst best: scientists answer the question

In hot weather, thirst occurs more often than ever. To get rid of this feeling, we drink different drinks: from water to Coca-Cola.

At the same time, you probably noticed that with the same amount of liquid drunk, these drinks quench thirst differently. So which of them is better to drink in hot weather?

For an answer, let's turn to researchers from the University of Tasmania - citing colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health, they say that the best drink is plain water.

But it is better to refrain from sweet products, including milk and juice, since they contain a lot of carbohydrates.

However, this is not the only reason - such drinks, in addition to everything else, increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and do not do a very good job of quenching thirst.

It is interesting that until recently scientists did not have a metric that would allow them to assess how a certain drink quenches thirst. This was corrected by British scientists.

They created an analogue of the glycemic index for the feeling of thirst. The higher it is, the less liquid (urine) leaves a person during the two-hour period after drinking the drink.

It was decided to take water as the starting point for the countdown – it was assigned the index “1”.

It turned out that milk, saline solution and orange juice have the highest hydration index. Coffee and soda have the worst effect on the body's fluid balance - their index is less than one.

Earlier we talked about why some people sneeze loudly , while others sneeze barely audibly.
