Why It's So Hard to Return to Work After Vacation: No, It's Not About Laziness

Vacation is a period of rest during which the level of stress and emotional tension decreases, but at the same time the body's ability to adapt to stressful situations weakens.

Even if a person previously easily coped with stress at work, after the holidays the same level of stress seems unbearable.

The emotional state also has a significant impact - you must admit, it is completely different during vacation, as well as a sharp change of scenery. That is why after a vacation you need time to get back into the work groove.

Another reason why there is no desire to get into the rhythm of work is that during vacation the daily routine often changes: people go to bed later and wake up later.

During vacation, physical activity usually changes, and it becomes difficult for us to cope with the transition to our previous sedentary lifestyle (or, conversely, to active physical work after passive rest).

During vacation, the body's level of the hormone responsible for stress and adaptation to it, cortisol, decreases, and the level of dopamine and serotonin (the so-called neurotransmitters of pleasure and happiness) increases, but after returning to work, their level drops again.

Since laziness is not characterized by changes in hormone and neurotransmitter levels, it would not be entirely correct to call this condition laziness.

In informal conversations, psychologists call this condition post-vacation depression, which is characterized by a bad mood, low motivation to work, increased fatigue and a desire to take another vacation.

There are many different reasons why a person may experience post-vacation depression – hard work, high stress levels, a large workload, tense relationships at work, low wages, etc.

Earlier we talked about whether nerve cells really do not regenerate.
