Active listening techniques

Here are some basic active listening techniques.

  • Paraphrasing is a brief repetition of what your interlocutor said in your own words.
  • Clarification – finding out and clarifying additional information or details in order to better understand a situation.
  • A message of perception is an expression in words that you understand the other person. For example, you can say, “I understand how hard it is for you right now,” etc.
  • Pause - used to show your opponent that you are carefully considering and rethinking what they said.

You can also ask relevant questions, but you shouldn't interrupt your interlocutor.
