Not only teachers, but also students can be violent – and most teachers can do nothing about it.

According to a national survey, teachers across the country shared their thoughts on the most effective strategies for combating violence among students,ADVICE.NEWS reports.

Let's find out what they found.

Fight against violence

Despite the popularity of "zero tolerance" policies, teachers rated suspension or expulsion of students as the least effective method.

Instead, they highlighted preventive measures, such as counseling troubled students and creating a positive school climate, as the most successful strategies for combating violence.

The study highlights that exclusionary disciplinary practices are associated with a higher likelihood of teachers experiencing violence.

Removing students through suspension or expulsion can escalate tensions and contribute to further violence.

The study data, collected through a web-based survey of 4,470 teachers, found that prevention, crisis intervention, and school discipline interventions were more positively associated with reducing violence.

Why is this important?

Teachers stressed the importance of preventive approaches such as counselling and improving the school environment to prevent and minimise incidents of violence.

The findings challenge the idea that excluding "problem" students makes schools safer and highlight the value of prevention efforts in addressing the root causes of aggressive behavior.
