This belief goes back to ancient times, when there was a tradition of burying the ashes of ancestors under the threshold of the house.
This was done so that the spirit of the deceased would protect relatives from troubles and misfortunes.
Since they were afraid of disturbing the souls of their ancestors, it was forbidden to greet, talk, pass things across the threshold, stand and sit on the threshold, or leave the house on the left foot.
It was believed that this brings quarrels, illnesses and other troubles into the house.
It was also believed that the bride was not allowed to enter the house herself; her husband carried her in his arms.
With the advent of Christianity, the tradition of burning the dead and burying their ashes under the threshold became a thing of the past, but the belief remained.
