Every year in the Belarusian capital, according to medical statistics, the number of people with diabetes is growing.

On average, their number increases by 7,500 people per year.

This figure was given by the head physician of the Minsk City Clinical Endocrinology Center, the chief endocrinologist of the city mayor's health committee, Elena Yurenya.

Last year, according to her, 80,000 diabetics were registered in the capital.

Moreover, in 95% of cases it was the second type of the disease, acquired, writes the Minsk-Novosti agency, citing a specialist.

She noted that diabetes is most often observed in pensioners (women with this disease are twice as likely as men).

Every 20th adult resident of the capital has diabetes, the endocrinologist noted.

The cause of this disease is believed to be metabolic obesity.

The risk of its occurrence is indicated by a waist circumference in women exceeding 80 centimeters, in men – more than 102 cm.

It is indicated that excess weight can provoke high blood cholesterol levels, arterial hypertension, and diabetes.

In turn, obesity occurs as a result of excessive consumption of high-calorie foods combined with a sedentary lifestyle.
