The capital's law enforcement officers detained a 66-year-old resident of Minsk, who worked as a courier for telephone scammers.
The lady completed only one task from her handler: she handed over to the intermediary 40 thousand dollars, which the scammers had extorted from a capital pensioner.
The message from the pensioner was received by the Oktyabrsky District Department of Internal Affairs of the city of Minsk, the Telegram channel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus reports.
She received a call on her home phone from an unknown person who introduced himself as a law enforcement officer and reported that her daughter had allegedly been in a traffic accident with serious consequences.
It was then suggested that a large sum of money be transferred so that the pensioner’s daughter would avoid criminal liability.
The same courier woman was supposed to come for the money. The pensioner gave her 40 thousand dollars.
The investigation established that the defendant was 66 years old, and that she took the money to a neighboring country, where she handed it over to an intermediary.
The suspect was detained upon her return to Belarus.
The woman admitted that she found an advert for a part-time job on a messenger and managed to complete only one task before her arrest.
A criminal case for fraud has been opened.
