The first fortifications on Poland's eastern border will be installed by the beginning of next week.
This was announced by Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz on the Polish radio station Radio Zet.
On November 1, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the start of construction of a line of defensive fortifications on the eastern border as part of the Eastern Shield program.
The program will cost Poland 10 billion zlotys ($2.5 billion). The work is scheduled to be completed in 2028.
The line of fortifications will consist of ditches, minefields and anti-tank hedgehogs. An active surveillance system will also be created.
The first fortifications will appear in the coming days, I think even before Independence Day, said Kosinyak-Kamysh.
Independence Day in Poland is celebrated on November 11. The head of the Polish defense ministry did not say where exactly the first fortifications will appear.
These will be concrete hedgehogs, various types of landscape preparation to restrict movement, the minister added.
