Former footballer becomes ruling party's presidential candidate in Georgia

Former football player Mikheil Kavelashvili has become the presidential candidate of the ruling Georgian Dream party.

This was announced by the founder and honorary chairman of the Georgian Dream Bidzina Ivanishvili at a briefing on November 27.

The Honorary Chairman of the Georgian Dream noted that Kavelashvili, during his tenure as a deputy, made a huge contribution to strengthening Georgia’s sovereignty and protecting its interests.

Ivanishvili expressed confidence that Kavelashvili will serve not a foreign force, but Georgia and its people.

He will return the honor that was temporarily taken away from the institution of the president, said the founder of Georgia’s ruling party.

Mikheil Kavelashvili was born in Tbilisi in 1971. During his football career, he played for Tbilisi Dynamo, Vladikavkaz Alania, English Manchester City, and three Swiss clubs.

He also played for the Georgian national team. Since 2016, he has been a member of parliament from the Georgian Dream.

The day before, the Georgian parliament set the presidential elections for December 14, and the inauguration for December 29. The president will be elected for the first time by an electoral college.
